Speech given by Abraham Lincoln on October 1, 1856, during the Buchanan-Fremont campaign. Item is bound with: photostat (positive) copies of images of Postville (Logan County) Court House, 1840 and the Latham Home, Lincoln, Illinois; attestation and "notes concerning the settlement of Logan County, Illinois; history of the first courthouse of the county" by William Wyatt Latham; and history of the naming of the city of Lincoln. Also includes: ALS from William Wyatt Latham to Harvard College Library, 1931 Oct. 14 explaining provenance of original manuscript and history of copies; and mimeographed transcript of a letter from Lincoln to George Latham, 1860 July 23, concerning George's difficulty getting into Harvard College. Latham was a friend of Lincoln's son Robert Todd Lincoln, who was then at Harvard (Class of 1864).
